Côte des Boeufs is a small hill close to Pissarro’s home in L’Hermitage in the village of Pontoise not far from Paris. The hill was sometimes also called Côte de St Denis.

The following pigment analysis is based on the technical examination of the painting at the National Gallery London (1).

1 Dark blue accent on the tree branch: artificial ultramarine.

2 Stroke of pure red in the foreground: vermilion.

3 Green foreground: viridian, and emerald green.

4 Tree trunk in the middle: lead white, artificial ultramarine, red lake, orange ochre and emerald grenn.

5 Sky in the upper right edge: a lower layer of viridian, artificial ultramarine, and red lake overpainted by an upper layer of artificial ultramarine.
