Timeline for Orange Pigments

The main colour giving component of natural orange ochre is limonite which is not a single mineral but a mixture of several minerals.

Realgar is orange arsenic sulfide with the formula As4S4. It occurs naturally as a mineral and can also be prepared artificially.

Chrome orange is basic lead chromate with the chemical formula PbO•PbCrO4. The records of usage of chrome orange are rare.

Light cadmium orange is pure cadmium sulfide CdS, the deeper orange tones contain up to 12% selenium sulfide.

Antimony orange is probably a compound of antimony, sulfur, and oxygen with an approximate formula of 2 Sb2S3 • Sb2O3.
