The painting is also known as the Pala Baglione or Borghese Entombment
It was commissioned by Atalanta Baglioni of Perugia in memory of her son, Grifonetto Baglioni, who was killed during a conspiracy within the Baglioni family.

This pigment analysis is based on the work of the scientists at the University of Perugia and the Institute of Scientific Techniques for New Materials and New Technologies in Rome (1).
1 Blue draperies: Underlayer of azurite and lead white overpainted with natural ultramarine.
2 Magdalen’s red drapery: carmine (kermes)
3 Grifonetto’s red robe and footwear: vermilion overpainted with madder lake
4 Yellow footwear of the man behind Christ: lead-tin yellow probably overpainted by a stil de grain (buckthorn) lake.
