Amadeo Modigliani, Portrait of a Young Woman is a diminutive and intimate portrait of the artist’s wife Jeanne Hébuterne. The pigment analysis revealed a limited palette of ochres, cadmium yellow, vermilion, zinc white, lead white, and the rather rare chrome orange.

The following pigment analysis is based on the investigation of scientists working on the Modigliani Technical Research Study (1).
1 Skin: Modigliani mainly used lead white and chrome orange for the continuous skin tone. The nose, jaw, and top of the forehead are delineated in yellow ochre.
2 Red lips: red ochre, vermilion, and chrome orange
3 Brown hair: yellow, and brown ochre
4 Greyish-white area: bone black, lead white, and zinc white
5 Black blouse: bone black
6 Yellow background: cadmium yellow, and yellow ochre
