This painting is the artist’s sole self-portrait painted approximately one year before his untimely death.
The pigment analysis revealed a palette comparable to other works by the artist and consisting of ochres, chrome yellow, chrome red, charcoal black, Prussian blue, artificial ultramarine, vermilion, zinc yellow, lead white, and the rather rare chrome orange.

Yellow: Chrome yellow, and zinc yellow
Orange: Chrome orange
Red: Red ochre, vermilion, and chrome red
Brown: Red ochre, brown ochre, and charcoal black
Blue: Prussian blue and artificial ultramarine
Black: Charcoal black
