Pigment Analysis of Rembrandt, Hendrickje Stoffels

This pigment analysis is based on the work of scientists at the National Gallery London (1).

1 Highlights in the face: lead white tinted with vermilion

2 Shadow on the shoulder: Vandyke brown, lead white and black overpainted with lead white tinted with vermilion

3 Tablecloth in the foreground: warm brown underlayer consists of ochres, small amounts of lead white, red lake, and black. The upper layer is a glaze of a mixture of madder lake and carmine cochineal lake with an addition of yellow lake in the lighter areas.

4 Darkest areas of tablecloth: same pigments as in 3 above with the addition of black pigment

5 Orange-red highlight on the edge of the tablecloth: orange-red ochre and red transparent lake

6 Dress of Hendrickje: lead white, charcoal black, and red lake

7 Reflections on the arm of the chair: yellow ochre, orange ochre and lead-tin-yellow in the lightest parts

8 Lighter brown background on the left: lower layer consists of red ochre and yellow ochre, red lake, and a little black. The upper layer consists of the same pigments but with a higher proportion of the translucent lake.

9 Darker brown background on the right: a single layer of ochres, red lake and a little black
