Overview

Rembrandt, Portrait of Jacob Trip, and its companion portrait of his wife Margaretha de Geer are examples of Rembrandt’s popularity as a portrait painter in the last decade of his life. The family of the Dordrecht merchant Jacob Trip was one of the richest in Holland.

The pigment analysis revealed a palette consisting of red and yellow ochres, smalt, umber, bone black, charcoal black, lead white, and red lake.

1 Dull greyish-green areas in the hands, below the beard and above the eyes: lead white, chalk, yellow ochre, umber, and charcoal black.

2 Greyish-green area with highlights on the proper right hand: the same mixture of pigments as in 1) with highlights in white lead with a scumble of ochres.
3 Red-brown color of the cloak: red lake (carmine cochineal and madder lake) mixed with large quantities of pale-colored smalt.

4 Deep orange-brown bolster of the chair: red lake (carmine cochineal and madder lake) mixed with large quantities of pale-colored smalt.
5 Dark brown bolster of the chair: ochres mixed with pale-colored smalt overpainted with a scumble of bone black.
