Claude Monet, ‘The Gare Saint-Lazare’ is one of the series of twelve paintings with the same subject. The pigment analysis revealed a special painting technique, where Monet chose a wide variety of pigments and mixed all of them to achieve an overall dark hue. The subtle differences in color were achieved by adding greater or lesser amounts of the individual pigments.

The pigments employed in this painting are artificial ultramarine, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, viridian, red lake, vermilion, emerald green, and chrome yellow.

Pigment Analysis

This pigment analysis is based on the work of the scientists at the National Gallery London (1). The overall dark color of this painting is composed of many individual pigments and the different hues are achieved by a greater proportion of one or several pigments of this color.
