Gallerie degli Uffizi, Florence, Italy
Painting

Michelangelo’s ‘Doni Tondo’ is his only surviving panel painting. It was commissioned by Agnolo Doni to commemorate his marriage to Maddalena Strozzi. The second word in the name of the painting derives from the Italian word tondo for the round form.

The pigment analysis by advanced scientific methods revealed interesting details about Michelangelo’s painting technique, such as his avoiding earth pigments (ochres) and using very little vermilion.

Pigment Analysis

This pigment analysis is based on the work of the scientists at the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (OPD), Florence, Italy (1). The scientists employed a whole array of methods to identify the pigments and learn about Michelangelo’s painting technique. The methods used were X-radiography (XRR)IR-reflectography (IRR), false colour infrared and ultraviolet imaging techniques, x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and fiber optics reflectance spectroscopy (FORS).
